Safety Monitor

A Safety Monitor is a legally mandated, trained adult chaperone who must be physically present inside any perimeter seating bus in British Columbia whenever an unaccompanied minor under the age of 19 is on board. Under BC commercial transportation laws, these monitors are hired or retained directly by the vehicle operator to oversee passenger compliance, protect passenger safety, and monitor overall conduct. Crucially, the safety monitor cannot be the chauffeur of the vehicle; they must be a separate individual who is at least 25 years of age. They must also successfully pass comprehensive criminal record checks and complete approved safety training modules. The monitor’s explicit duty is to instantly report any unsafe, rowdy, or illegal actions directly to the driver, who retains final authority over the lawful operation of the commercial vehicle.
